Patient Counseling Resources

Patient counseling is one of the many vital components of a pharmacist\'s professional responsibility toward his or her patients. Student pharmacists receive education and instruction in the art and science of patient counseling beginning early in the pharmacy curriculum through didactic lectures, role-play scenarios and mock counseling sessions in the Pharmacy Skills Laboratory. As such, student / patient interaction involving level-appropriate patient counseling encounters is typically a required component of both IPPE and APPE community and institutional rotations. The model of patient counseling used in student instruction is that developed by the U.S. Public Health Service and endorsed by the American Pharmacists Association (APhA). This method utilizes open-ended questioning techniques and involves the seven following components:

  1. Introduction and identification
  2. Explanation of purpose
  3. Use of the patient profile
  4. Assessing the patients understanding of the reason for therapy
  5. Conveying complete and accurate information including, but not limited to—
    1. Medication name
    2. Indication
    3. Dosage
    4. Storage
    5. Potential adverse effects and precautions
    6. What to do if a dose is missed
    7. Refill Information
  6. Verifying the patients understanding of the information
  7. Counseling session summary

Preceptors are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the PHS method of patient counseling employed in student instruction. The Patient Counseling Checklist provides an outline of the PHS patient counseling format for review. Additionally, the following DVD segment provides an audio / visual account of the winning counseling session at the 2007 APhA-ASP National Patient Counseling Competition.

You’ll need a media player such as "Windows Media Player" to play the file.
