PharmD Program Overview

Since its founding in 1885, the School of Pharmacy at the University of Kansas has been a leader in pharmaceutical education. Since 1996, the school has offered only the Doctor of Pharmacy degree as the entry level practice degree. The curriculum has been significantly revised to provide the education and experiential training that will provide the student with the knowledge, skills, and ability required of the pharmacy practitioner in the 21st century. The curriculum is comprehensive in scope and is designed to produce a highly competent general practitioner.

The full-time faculty of approximately 60 members is responsible for instruction in the undergraduate professional doctor of pharmacy program as well as in our graduate programs. Three of the four departments in the school; Pharmacology & Toxicology, Medicinal Chemistry, and Pharmaceutical Chemistry offer Masters and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The other department, Pharmacy Practice offers Masters degrees. Both the undergraduate and graduate divisions enjoy outstanding national and international reputations based on the excellence and productivity of the faculty of these departments. The School of Pharmacy is fully accredited by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education, the official accrediting body for American Pharmacy.

The School of Pharmacy is located on three campuses: the main campus in Lawrence, the Medical Center campus in Kansas City, and the Edwards Campus in Overland Park. Lawrence is a typical midwestern town with a population of 75,000. The University is located at the center of the town on a 1,000 acre campus, with 100 major buildings well equipped to fulfill the role of a major university affiliated with the select group known as the American Association of Universities, and is fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The Medical Center campus, about 40 minutes east from Lawrence by interstate highway in Kansas City, Kansas, is part of the greater metropolitan Kansas City area with an estimated population of one-and-a-half million people.
